Yogi
Vs Mafia
The
current budget session of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly will be known
more for discussion on mafias than for budget discussion. The main witness in
the murder case of BSP MLA Raju Pal who was advocate at Prayagraj High Court was killed in broad daylight by firing
bombs and bullets along with his gunner. When Leader of Opposition Akhilesh
Yadav tried to corner Yogi Aditya Nath in the assembly on this incident, a
heated debate broke out on the nexus of mafia and political parties due to
Yogi's plain and simple dialogue delivery.
Yogi's tenure has always been in discussion due to his policy of zero tolerance against criminals and mafia dons, whose effect is clearly visible in improved law and order situation. This has created his image as a politician of international fame. This was the reason why Chief Minister Yogi, pointing a finger at Leader of Opposition Akhilesh Yadav in the Assembly, could say with full confidence that “he is the patron of mafia and criminals”. Referring to the Gujarat jailed mafia don Atiq Ahmed, Yogi said that “the mafia which has carried out this incident has been repeatedly made MLA and MP by the Samajwadi Party. This mafia is nurtured by the Samajwadi Party, and we will destroy him(mix it with the soil). This echo of Yogi will keep resonating in the corridors of the assembly for a long time. There is hardly any such politician in Indian politics today, who can show the mirror to the opposition with so much confidence.
Within
24 hours of Yogi's announcement, a wanted criminal was
killed in an encounter, and the houses of two criminals were razed to the
ground. Trembling with fear, the family of the mafia has appealed to the court
not to send Atiq to Uttar Pradesh from Gujarat jail. To save lives, the family
members of mafia involved in criminal activities are either surrendering
themselves or running away from the state. This is happening because there is
no difference between the words and actions of a strong nationalist doing clean
politics and a sanyasi dedicated to Sanatan culture. In Yogi's last tenure,
when he implemented the policy of zero tolerance against crime and corruption,
its positive results started coming out. The criminals started reaching the
police stations with placards around their necks and started pleading to be put
in jail.
India
has a very old disease of damage to public property during protests and
agitations. In protest against the CAA,
where demonstrations were held for a long time by blocking the road in Shaheen
Bagh, and extensive damage was done to railway properties in many states
including West Bengal, but in Uttar Pradesh, the chaotic elements opposing this
law and their protection Political bosses who give keep calm. Wherever sporadic
incidents took place, they were dealt with strictly and the damage done to
public properties was compensated by the lawless elements. Posters of wanted
criminals were pasted at square intersections and illegally constructed
buildings of criminals were demolished by bulldozers. For this reason, neither
any movement turned violent during the Yogi regime, nor could anyone muster the
courage to damage public properties in any movement. Yogi's bulldozer model
became so famous that his name itself became "Bulldozer Baba". There
was a lot of discussion about this name and work at the international level as
well. New York Times, Washington Post, BBC etc. published many articles on this.
In Pakistan, Bulldozer Baba was talked about as much as probably no Chief
Minister there would have been till now.
Although the criminalization of politics had started long back, but after the rise of regional parties, political parties resorted to criminals, mafias and even dacoits in the race to get power at any cost. These musclemen used to force people to vote in favor of a particular party by intimidation or prevented them from voting. Booth capturing at the behest of political bosses was a lucrative business for these musclemen. In return, they had a free hand to do criminal activities under government protection. Extortion or goonda tax collection, murder, kidnapping, and rape were very common incidents. Forcible occupation of people's houses and other properties was common. Kidnapping was a huge industry. Due to political pressure, the police either used to remain a mute spectator or it used to participate with these criminals. Because of this, neither any industries were flourishing, nor could anyone muster the courage to make big investments.
In
Uttar Pradesh, politicians and mafia were complementary and supplementary
to each other for a long time. Gradually, political ambition arose in
the mafia too and they realized that if they can help politician
to win the elections, then why can't they win the elections themselves.
Under the pressure of these musclemen, political parties started making them
party candidates for Assempbly and Parliamentary
elections and in this way criminals and mafia also won elections and
became MLAs and MPs. It is ironically that the Phulpur
parliamentary constituency from which Jawaharlal Nehru was elected and reached
the Parliament, the Samajwadi Party made Atiq Ahmed win the election and reach
the Parliament. He has also been an MLA of the Samajwadi Party many times.
Another mafia Mukhtar Ansari, who is the nephew of former Vice President Hamid Ansari, has also been a Samajwadi Party MLA. After Yogi
became the Chief Minister, Mukhtar Ansari flew to Punjab to lead a luxurious life in the Punjab Jail
because of his connections with the Congress. The Congress government of Punjab
has not sent the fearful Mukhtar to Uttar Pradesh until the Supreme Court
passes an order in this regard. His son is an MLA in the present assembly, who
has been elected on the symbol of Samajwadi Party's ally. The credit goes to
the Samajwadi Party for making Bandit Queen PhoolanDevi a Member of Parliament from Mirzapur. Veer Singh Patel, the
son of infamous dacoit Dadua, was also declared by the Samajwadi Party as its
candidate from the Manikpur assembly seat in Chitrakoot.
Just
like the most regional parties where
politics is a family business, similarly the criminal empire of these
mafia Dons is also a family business, and their brothers, sons, wives and daughters-in-law are also involved in their
business. The second generation of these mafias is also reaching the Assembly and Parliament. Be it Azam Khan or Mukhtar Ansari, Atiq
Ahmed or any other, all have done the work of connecting family, crime and
politics. One or the other political party is their patron, and this bitter
truth was exposed by Yogi in the assembly. There is also an interesting fact
that mafias belonging to a particular religion are considered a "Double Bonanza" of politics because
the political patronage given to them also strengthens appeasement and
consolidates minority votes more strongly.
After the introduction of Electronic Voting Machine (EVM), the election malpractices in the country by strong-willed criminals and mafia, especially booth capturing and forcibly voting in favor of a particular party in bulk, have been curbed to a great extent. The role of musclemen (Bahubali) criminals and mafia, who earlier used to organize caste conflicts and communal riots, is decreasing day by day. It is no longer easy for regional political parties dependent on musclemen to win elections, and for this reason, EVMs are blamed, and ballot papers are demanded.
Yogi's historical and much awaited work of
curbing the mafia got strong support from the public not only in the state but
in the whole of India. The political parties who formed the government and
gained power on the strength of the mafia strongly opposed it and made every
possible effort to put Yogi in the dock. Human rightists, secularists and many
organizations doing business of social service have created various false narratives against Yogi, but all of them have completely failed
to understand that Yogi is doing the work against criminals to establish law
and order. The action taken is in line with the aspirations of the people for
which they have been waiting for a long time. Pleased with Yogi's strict action
against criminals and mafia, the public stood behind him like a rock. Many
campaigns like Operation Majnu, Operation Romiyo and Mission Shakti did very well in creating a favorable environment for women by putting
the miscreants behind the bars and awakened the sense of security among the
women of the state.
The
public is fed up with the criminals and mafia-based Jungle Raj. It is the
result of good law and order of Uttar Pradesh that many investors are coming to
the state, due to which employment opportunities will increase and migration
will stop. There will be an increase in basic infrastructure facilities and
people will be able to lead a safe life while doing their work peacefully.
Today this is also the need of the time, and every
political party has to understand it. Those who do not understand will get lost
in the near future.
